Who are you?
We are looking for an Indigenous person to join our Training and Outreach team with a focus on regions in the James Bay area. You are interested in working with a close-knit and Canada-wide team to coordinate training, education and outreach activities with northern communities and other organizations. You are interested in supporting Indigenous self-determination, technological innovation, and environmental leadership for Indigenous community members through SIKU: The Indigenous Knowledge Social Network.
Responsibilities
Your role will be based on your interests and expertise. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills and be involved in some or all of the following key priorities:
- Support and lead workshops for Indigenous-driven projects while enhancing your organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
- Help Indigenous communities take action about climate change and other environmental priorities by supporting local projects, including Climate Action Projects through our “SILA FOR SIKU” initiative.
- Work with outreach team, Indigenous leadership, app development team and others to learn new skills and technology, assist in the development of new and improved features on SIKU that support research, monitoring, safety, language preservation and leadership roles for Indigenous communities in research and climate monitoring.
- Opportunities to be involved in key meetings with regional Indigenous organizations, communities and all levels of government through conferences, workshops and events through SIKU, Arctic Eider Society, the Hudson Bay Consortium and international events – we will support Indigenous individuals in building leadership and outreach skills
- Contribute to local, regional and international events, press and conferences by representing and communicating Indigenous priorities and SIKU tools and services. We will support and amplify your voice – we are looking for Indigenous individuals who want to share their visions for the future!
Good to have
- Ability to speak Cree
- Relevant work experience
- Some post secondary training
- Experience working with Indigenous communities, e.g., organizing community consultations
- Passion about community-driven initiatives, Indigenous self-determination, diversity and equity in environmental stewardship, and linking scientific research and Indigenous Knowledge
- Availability to travel to northern communities, conferences and meetings, including internationally
- Skills in communication, relationship-building, patience and engagement
- Competency with social media technology and able to troubleshoot technical issues
Contract Details
- Type: Full-time, Contract
- Location: This is a remote position with the potential to be based at Mushkegowuk Council office in Timmins. The position is focused on Cree communities in Mushkegowuk and Eeyou Istchee regions of coastal James Bay that will require some travel, mainly in the Canadian north but possibly internationally in the future.
- Hours: 35-40 hours per week
- Duration: Long term contract with the understanding that if there is a good fit the contract would be renewed
- Salary: Competitive and commensurate with experience
