Our pitch

This month the SIKU project is one of 10 Canadian charities competing in the 2017 Google.org Impact Challenge. The Challenge is seeking technological innovations that can change the world. With public voting ongoing from March 6-28th, we’re encouraging Canadians to make a difference here at home. A vote for SIKU supports tools for community networking, and resilience in a time of rapid change.

Changing sea ice conditions in the Canadian north are causing challenges for communities. Travel across the ice is becoming more dangerous, with implications for northern food security. Inuit are observing these changes, and SIKU will provide novel ways to document and mobilize that knowledge to improve safety, knowledge transfer, language preservation, education and environmental stewardship.

SIKU’s tools and services are uniquely designed to meet the needs of northern communities with a user-friendly social media interface. Information shared on the platform will contribute to a living wiki of Inuit knowledge to be used by communities for their own benefit. SIKU will also become a one-stop shop for the latest satellite images and weather data, making it easier for coastal communities to make informed decisions about navigating on the land and sea ice
