Who are you?
We are looking for an Indigenous person to join our SIKU Training and Outreach team with a focus on community climate action projects in the Kivalliq region. You are interested in working with a close-knit and Canada-wide team to coordinate training, education and outreach activities with northern communities and other organizations. You are interested in supporting Indigenous self-determination, technological innovation, and environmental leadership for Indigenous community members through SIKU: The Indigenous Knowledge Social Network.
Responsibilities
Your role will be based on your interests and expertise. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills and be involved in some or all of the following key priorities:
- Help Indigenous communities take action about climate change and other environmental priorities by supporting local projects, including Climate Action Projects using SIKU and as a part of our “SILA FOR SIKU” initiative.
- Support and lead workshops in communities in the Kivalliq region for Inuit-driven projects, including those supporting research, monitoring, safety, language preservation and gender equality, while enhancing your organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
- Work with community groups and organizations in coordination with the SIKU outreach team to prioritize and suggest new and improved features for SIKU that support Indigenous-led research, monitoring, safety, language preservation and leadership roles for Indigenous communities in research and climate monitoring.
- Deliver programs collaboratively with key partners such as the Nunavut Arctic College’s Environmental Technology Program, Pinnguaq, Ikaarvik, and SmartICE.
- Opportunities to be involved in key meetings with regional Indigenous organizations, communities and all levels of government through conferences, workshops and events through SIKU, Arctic Eider Society, the Hudson Bay Consortium and international events – we will support Indigenous individuals in building leadership skills and sharing their vision for the future.
- Contribute to local, regional and international events, press and conferences by representing and communicating Indigenous priorities and SIKU tools and services. We will support and amplify your voice – we are looking for Indigenous individuals who want to share their visions for the future!
Good to have
- Relevant work experience
- Some post-secondary training, such as through Nunavut/Nunavik Sivuniksavut, Nunavut Arctic College or other university and college programs.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities, e.g., organizing community consultations
- Passion about community-driven initiatives, Indigenous self-determination, diversity and equity in environmental stewardship, and linking scientific research and Indigenous knowledge
- Available to travel to northern communities, conferences and meetings, including internationally
- Skilled at communication, relationship-building, being patient and fostering engagement in support of community projects.
- Competent with social media technology and able to troubleshoot technical issues
- Experience working with Indigenous language speakers through translators or directly
Contract Details
- Type: Part-time to full-time, Contract
- Location: This is a remote position that will require some travel, mainly in the Kivalliq region but possibly in other regions of Inuit Nunangat or internationally in the future.
- Hours: Part-time to full-time, depending on availability (20-35 hours per week)
- Duration: Long-term contract with the understanding that if there is a good fit the contract would be renewed
- Rate of Pay: Competitive and commensurate with experience
